The ERASMUS program is one of the most prestigious student exchange opportunities in Europe. Grade average is one of the key recruitment criteria, but not the only one. Check what the requirements are and how to increase your chances of going abroad.
What is the ERASMUS program?
ERASMUS (European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is a European Union program enabling students to study or do internships abroad.
Through the program, you can spend 3 to 12 months at a partner university abroad, studying on the same terms as local students.
Expenses are partially or fully covered by the ERASMUS grant – you receive a monthly scholarship and travel reimbursement.
What average is required for ERASMUS?
There is no single universal average required for all universities and programs.
Requirements depend on:
- Your home university and its internal regulations
- Field of study
- Destination country and partner university
- Number of available places and competition
Typical requirements:
- Minimum average: 3.5 - 4.0 (in some cases even 3.0)
- Competitive average: 4.5 - 5.0
- Prestigious universities/programs: often above 4.7
How is ERASMUS average calculated?
The average is calculated from all grades obtained during studies up to the application moment.
Most commonly used methods:
- ECTS-weighted average - considers ECTS points for each course
- Arithmetic average of all subjects
- Some universities only consider the last academic year
Check the ERASMUS regulations at your university – the calculation method may differ.
Other Recruitment Criteria (besides average)
- Motivation and motivation letter - very important element!
- Foreign language proficiency (B2, C1 certificates)
- Previous trips and international experience
- Academic activity, publications, projects
- Interview with the committee
- Study plan and subject compatibility
In many cases, a great motivation letter and language skills can compensate for a somewhat lower average!

- Get a language certificate (B2/C1) - it's a big advantage

Departure for summer semester (February/March):

- Group 2 (medium costs): approx. 500-600 EUR/month (Germany, France, Spain, Italy)
