In Poland, the official grading scale is from 1 to 6. Pluses and minuses are only voluntary extensions that schools and teachers may use according to their own rules.
- 6 – excellent
- 5 – very good
- 4 – good
- 3 – satisfactory
- 2 – passing
- 1 – failing
The use of plus (+) and minus (−) symbols is not regulated by any legal act and is not part of the official grading scale.
Many schools and teachers extend the 1-6 scale with additional symbols to more precisely differentiate student results. School documents often state:
"To increase student motivation, the use of plus and minus symbols with partial grades is allowed."
However, the use of these symbols is solely the decision of the school or teacher. It is not a universal regulation and there is no nationwide conversion table.
There is no single official way to convert such grades to numbers.
Each school that uses pluses and minuses may develop its own conversion system, or not convert them at all.
Some schools provide converters in the statute or 'Grading Rules', others don't publish them at all. Therefore, the only reliable source is the specific school's documentation or information from the teacher.
The following tables show the most popular systems — these are examples, unofficial.
